Some of the scenes and plot points in this film were adapted from various Tamil films, including "Thenmazhai" (1966), "Bommalattam" (1966) and "Adimai Penn" (1969).While Aamir Khan and Salman Khan's characters were named Amar and Prem after the film "Amar Prem" (1971), Raveena Tandon and Karishma Kapoor's characters were named after the actresses themselves.The son of actor Ajit, Shehzad Khan, had a role modelled after the villains his father had played in the past.This film was in the making for 3 years.Having made two serious films back-to-back - "Ghayal" (1990) and "Damini" (1993) - Rajkumar Santoshi decided to make a comedy for a change. The idea for this film was born when producer Vinay Sinha approached Rajkumar Santoshi to make a film with Aamir Khan.This film failed at the box office but gained the status of a cult comedy classic over the years.This was Tushar Bhatia's only film as a music director. This album featured retro music which evoked the sounds of the 1960s.
